Chapter Fourteen

Our destination loomed ahead, a grand building with press outside and plenty of people milling around in business suits.

Zephyr and I landed separately beside each other, Sen on my shoulder. I’d considered leaving her behind, but we’d decided it was better if she was with me.

As we’d expected, there was an immediate response to the building having a dragon on their front doorstep. The press also flashed photos of us as security came over, many of them looking nervous.

“I’m sorry, but you can’t bring pets into the building,” the first one said, making me roll my eyes and just turn to Zephyr. Why did everyone seem to think he was some kind of pet? He’d spoken so many times now.

“I’m not a pet,” he simply said. “And where Aella goes, I go too. To separate us for a prolonged period of time is a murder sentence to us both.”

The security guard nearest didn’t seem to know how to respond, but I saw our lawyer come over to us, a smile on his face.

“This way,” he said. “I think Zephyr should be able to fit through if we go through the main door, although it might be a squeeze getting him into the room we’re using.”

“We can’t allow a dragon into the building,” the security guard protested again, his hand going to his holster and the gun that sat within.

“I wouldn’t bother with that if I were you,” I said, pointing to the weapon. “He’s bulletproof, and my powers can send the bullet flying in another direction. It’s probably best if we don’t have one ricocheting off into the crowd and harming innocent people now, isn’t it?”

Again the security men blinked and looked between each other.

The lawyer immediately took charge again, ushering the three of us toward the large double doors.

As we’d all predicted, it was a squeeze to get Zephyr inside and no one could walk past him while he was moving down the hallway, but my lawyer handled the situation with a great deal of grace and patience.

While he led us toward the room our investigation would be conducted in, other lawyers, judges, and people involved in cases being heard in the building opened doors to peek out and even took a step or two into the corridor toward us.

Each time Mr. Johnson waved them back, asking them to duck into side rooms or simply wait on the other side of the section we were traveling down. Thankfully the room we were using also had a set of double doors, although one was still locked in place.

The security on the door scrambled to unlock it and pull it open, their eyes wide and staring at Zephyr as he came closer.

I tried to be polite and say hi to everyone we passed, as did Zephyr, making even more of an impression. Most people said hello back, acknowledging the dragon with dignified surprise. Some seemed composed enough to hide their shock or maybe they were some of the few who realized he could speak.
